Cross-Pollination: NUM × EKOLiTiKA Job Shadowing

Some visits don't come with an agenda. This one didn't either. NUM came to us from Lepoglava, Croatia, and for a few days we simply walked, talked, and worked alongside each other across Skopje, Ohrid, and Struga.

No launch, no big announcement, just two teams meeting to see what sparked between them.

Two Ways of Working, One Meeting Point

NUM spends its days with young people: volunteering, community projects, getting people involved and keeping them there. We look at almost everything through one lens, is this sustainable, and does it have enough care in it to keep going? Different starting points, but the same question kept surfacing between us: how do you make good work last?

We're calling this Cross-Pollination because that's really what happens when two organizations meet like this. You don't copy the other team's playbook. You watch, you ask, and you take home whatever actually fits your own soil.

Watching Before Asking

Most of the visit happened outdoors, walking, sitting on steps, talking as we went, with almost no closed sessions or slide decks. The one room we did step into was the Archaeological Museum in Skopje, which is one of EKOLiTiKA's own methods: looking at how people stored food, reused materials, and built things to last long before "sustainable" was even a word.

Back in the open air, two things stood out about how NUM works. They check in with people before they check the plan, letting the agenda bend around whoever's in the room. And their volunteers aren't treated as extra hands, they carry a real piece of the work, same as anyone else on the team.

What Felt Familiar

Youth work and sustainability work sound like different fields, but they run on a lot of the same instincts. Both NUM and EKOLiTiKA started because a small group of people noticed a gap nobody was filling and just started filling it, without waiting for permission or the perfect version.

Both organizations also care more about who shows up and why than what a title says, and both are quietly asking the same underlying question: how do you build something that actually holds, instead of something that happens once and disappears?

What Felt Different

Not everything matched, and that turned out to be the more useful half of the visit. NUM circles everything back to one focus, young people, by them and for them. We work across a wider, messier space that includes environment, people, animals, and the systems connecting them.

NUM tends to move fast, testing and adjusting live, while EKOLiTiKA tends to slow down and sit with a question longer, even in front of a 2,000-year-old storage jar, still asking "is this sustainable" the same way we ask it about anything else. Neither approach is better. The gap between us is where the interesting questions live.

Questions We're Still Holding

Not every idea needs an answer right away. A few questions came home with us instead of solutions:

Could starting sessions by checking in with people first make our own work stronger, not slower? What would it look like if volunteers in our projects carried as much weight as NUM's do? If old storage methods were sustainability in practice long before the word existed, what else is sitting in history that we haven't looked at closely yet? What actually makes a good idea stick, instead of fading after the first try?

We don't have answers yet, and we're not pretending to. Sometimes the most useful thing you bring back from an exchange isn't a solution, it's a sharper question.

What We Carry Home

A few habits are coming back with us: listening first, before the plan; rethinking what a volunteer actually is; and leaning harder on history as a working method, not just a museum we walked through once. Along the way, we also stopped by INKA in Struga for a short, good conversation about creativity and culture, connected through Creative Europe.

None of this changes who either organization is. NUM isn't becoming EKOLiTiKA, and we're not becoming NUM. We just spent a few days close enough to each other's work to pick up a few habits worth trying somewhere new.

Thank you, NUM, for letting us watch, ask, and learn.
